Our Structure

A people-driven coalition, Girls Count has many committed, responsible, and passionate individuals across generations who wish to create lasting change in the communities. Girls Count consists of various components, namely the Secretariat, Steering Group, Action Group on PC-PNDT, Patriarchy, and Parliamentary Advocacy. Together, we create lasting change in the communities across India.

Secretariat

A national convergence point, set up in Delhi, supporting, coordinating, and facilitating various ideas and initiatives across the country. The Secretariat is the driving force behind the initiatives, managing research, media and communication, community mobilization and outreach, advocacy, and operational matters.

Steering Group

Comprising advisory members, including specialists, activists, gender experts, and skilled campaigners, this group ensures civil society ownership. They make policy decisions, plan yearly actions, raise resources, and oversee operations. Additionally, they manage the program's direction and content, ensuring alignment with the initiative's core principles.

Action Group on PC-PNDT Act

The group includes civil society representatives responsible for developing strategies and action plans after sessions of brainstorming. Their focus is on building capacity, enhancing accountability, supporting government initiatives, monitoring and evaluating progress, and fostering collaboration.

Action Group on Patriarchy

The group, consisting of coalition members, develops strategies and action plans to counter son preference and daughter unwantedness. Their work includes policy analysis around pre-birth and post-birth discrimination, identifying gaps in inheritance laws, the Dowry Prohibition Act, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, and the Hindu Succession Act, among others.

Action Group on Parliamentary Advocacy

The group is dedicated to supporting legislative processes and policies to address son preference and daughter unwantedness. We monitor and support laws that promote gender equality, engage with stakeholders to build broad support and lead advocacy campaigns to raise awareness.
